His Name Was Basem…..

His name was Basem, which means smile, and that is how he greeted everyone. But we all called him ‘Pheel’, which means elephant because he had the body the size of an elephant. But Basem had the heart of a child.

He loved everyone, and because of his sweetness and ability to make us laugh, everyone loved him. Basem was everyone’s friend: the children talk about how he would play with them, scare them and then make them laugh. He would tend the garden in the playground and bring toys and books to the kindergarten. The old ladies in the village talk about how he used to visit, to ask after them and see if they needed anything. In the village, he seemed to be everywhere at once. He would pop in to say hello, take one puff of the nargila, and be off to his next spot. The morning he was killed he went to the house of Hamis, whose skull had been broken at a previous demonstration three months ago by a tear gas canister projectile - the same weapon that would kill Basem.

Basem woke Hamis and gave him his medicine, then off he went to visit another friend in the village who is ill with cancer. Then a little girl from the village wanted a pineapple but couldn’t find any in the local stores. So Basem went to Ramallah to get a pineapple and was back before noon for the Friday prayers and the weekly demonstration against the theft of our land by the apartheid wall. Pheel never missed a demonstration; he participated in all the activities and creative actions in Bilin. He would always talk to the soldiers as human beings. Before he was hit he was calling for the soldiers to stop shooting because there were goats near the fence and he was worried for them. Then a woman in front of him was hit. He yelled to the commander to stop shooting because someone was wounded. He expected the soldiers to understand and stop shooting. Instead, they shot him too.

People came to his funeral from all the surrounding villages to show Basem that they loved him as much as he had loved them. But those of us from Bil’in kept looking around for him, expecting him to be walking with us.

Pheel, you were everyone’s friend. We always knew we loved you, but didn’t realize how much we would miss you until we lost you. As Bil’in has become the symbol of Palestine’s popular resistance, you are the symbol of Bil’in. Sweet Pheel, Rest in Peace, we will continue in your footsteps.

This was a caring human being who gave of himself to all those around him.  It’s the people like the fine gentle soul you have just read about who inspire me to do what I do.

Yes, Pheel, rest in peace now.  I too will attempt to continue in your footsteps.   Though yours are very big shoes to fill I promise I will never give up.

Last supper.....

By Aluf Benn, Haaretz Correspondent
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and his wife Aliza are to dine this evening at the White House with President George W. Bush and his wife Laura. The farewell dinner for the outgoing leaders and their wives is to be the centerpiece in Olmert's visit here, which is being conducted with less media fanfare than usual. Most of the media outlets in Israel chose not to send reporters on Olmert's plane, and there is little interest in his reactions to events in Israel.

Olmert had dinner Sunday night with Eliott Abrams, the deputy national security adviser who holds the "Israel portfolio" at the White House. This morning he is to meet with Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley, to prepare for his meeting with the president. Olmert will also meet with Vice President Richard Cheney.

Only one hour was set aside for the working meeting between Bush and Olmert before the private dinner. Olmert would like to talk to the president about "anchoring" American security pledges that Bush will pass on to president-elect Barack Obama. At the top of the list is $30 billion!!!(emphasis mine) in military aid over the coming decade.

So, how does it feel my American friends, to still be such a faithful sponsor of Israeli terrorism.

Comments.....

I've really got to stop reading the comments sections for the articles in Haaretz. I found this gem today at the link I've gladly provided and I'm trying hard not to loose my temper, as this sort of vile bullshit is normal in that backward country. Keep in mind when the asshole is referring to "terrorists" and their "supporters" these include any living, breathing Palestinian, human rights observer, aid agent, and anyone else who stands between his God-given Israel and Palestine. You should read some of the shit I've received from assholes like this who forgot to crawl into the first millenium let alone the 21st century. Do you have any questions about what the problem is over there?
Amos Harel, Haaretz Correspondent and The Associated Press: Mortars and rockets hit Negev, after deadly IDF raid near Gaza

Talkback

Title: Philistine "Ceasefire": We Cease- They Fire
Name: Yishai Kohen
City: YeShA, Israel State:

Why do we play their games? We need to do to them in Gaza what we did in Jenin- and then some.

What We Must Do In Gaza To Bring Peace:

1. Drop fliers on a terrorist location; say Beit Hanoun. All civilians have one hour to leave.

2. After EXACTLY one hour, begin carpet bombing.

3. Follow up with artillery- lots of it.

4. Send in a commando force like Sayeret Egoz, Matkal, etc... to capture and hold key positions.

5. Send in tanks and infantry.

6. Kill any and every terrorist remaining.

7. Do the same in the next chosen location.

8. REMAIN in these places.

9. Do this until the terrorists surrender UNCONDITIONALLY.

10. Expel ALL of them and their supporters. Send them back to Tunis- minus those who need to be punished for their crimes.

11. Rebuild the beautiful, vibrant, thriving Jewish communities that were uprooted for "peace".

12. Voila! Peace.

Our lives are worth more than their lives. Our soldiers` lives are worth more than their lives.

What goes around comes around Mr. Kohen, and this is going to come around and bite you in the ass real hard.
